Programs & Service Areas

At the Elinor Martin Residence for Mother & Child, we not only provide transitional housing for at-risk pregnant women, we strive to ensure that these mothers have the resources needed to deliver healthy babies, and that once their babies are born, they have acquired the necessary skills to provide and care for themselves and their children.

Our independent living curriculum is a key component of our mission and one which differentiates us from facilities that simply provide a temporary place to sleep. Our principal programs, which empower women and help them become self-sufficient, include the following:

ROUND THE CLOCK PARENTAL SUPPORT
The goal of our Round the Clock Parental Support Program is to provide safe housing for both mother and child with 24-hour care and supervision. Within a secure and supervised environment, our young mothers are able to benefit from adult guidance and peer support, pursue school and work, and learn how to be independent in the context of a safe, structured environment.

PREGNANCY CONSULTING COLLEGE OUTREACH PROGRAM Our College Outreach Program focuses on nearby college campuses in Westchester County and provides confidential pregnancy testing and consulting to proactively give young women positive alternatives to abortion.

Program Highlights:

Offering more options: In an effort to break the abusive cycle of domestic violence and abandonment, we began housing older women with older children, up to 3 years old, as well as housing women with more than one child. These vulnerable moms and children require many of the same interventions that we provide to our new moms through the Child-At-Risk Program. The demand for our services is typically up to 24 mothers and babies a year.

Reaching out: Through our college outreach program, located on local college campuses, women receive free self administered pregnancy testing followed by pregnancy consulting, community referrals, housing, and assistance in finding the resources they need.

Making a home: 24 women and children had the opportunity to be a part of nurturing and safe housing provided at the Elinor Martin Residence for Mother & Child this year. During their stay, the young women learned to be competent mothers within a secure and supervised environment.

In the community: The reach of the Elinor Martin Residence for Mother & Child extends beyond the walls of the residence. Though our Wayside Thrift Shoppe, donations are recycled into affordable clothes and accessories for the community. The Wayside Thrift Shoppe is located at 454 1/2 South Broadway, Yonkers, NY. Job Readiness & Educational Support

A principal goal of the Elinor Martin Residence for Mother & Child is to provide our young moms with opportunities that strengthen their life skills and leadership abilities so they may transition successfully from residential living to leading stable and independent lives with gainful employment.

That is why the Job Readiness and Educational Support Program was established in 1998 and has grown to include a comprehensive series of educational and experiential classes and supports for our residents.

The Job Readiness and Educational Support Program includes the following components: Life Skills – money management, budgeting, cost-effective grocery shopping, and nutrition; Job Training Skills – resume writing/building, computer skills, and interviewing classes to help mothers pursue both educational and professional goals; GED Preparation – support in pursuing other educational and career opportunities, computer lab training; Parenting Programs, Individual Counseling and Group Sessions including efforts to build self-esteem and self-awareness.
